Tamoya is a franchise originated from Japan and the brand was first introduced in 1996 by the udon master and founder of Tamoya, Tamotsu Kurokawa. Tamoya already has 29 outlets spread in Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Taiwan before opening its first Indonesia branch in Emporium Pluit Mall. At the new outlet in Central Park Mall, the place is quite spacious and well designed with Japanese ambiance.

Once you get to the restaurant, you can choose your meal and side dishes with a self-service concept. Focusing on Udon and Tempura, all dishes are prepared freshly as you can see in their open kitchen where the chef makes the udon from scratch. The unique point of Tamoya is that they served black udon in addition to the ordinary white udon.

Tamoya offers some side dishes that you can choose and ranging from prawn tempura, kakiage (vegetable fritter), dory katsu, sweet potato, mushroom, egg tempura, pumpkin, chicken karaage, tamago, gyoza, sushi, etc. They also have the station where you can refill your drinks (ocha, lemon tea, or blackcurrant) and as many toppings as you want (fried crumbs, sauce, ginger, spring onions, horseradish, and chili slices). Their side dishes are recommended to be served with their signature tempura sauce and also Tonkatsu sauce.

Niku Udon

Every time we go to an Udon restaurant, we always try their Niku Udon since it is our most favorite udon so far. In this time, we ordered it with black udon which has a chewier texture than white udon. This menu is the good old classic with udon, shoyu beef broth and beef slices. The beef was very juicy, tender, and fragrant! It also comes with onion and seaweed.

Beef Kamatama Udon

We tried this one since we saw that the picture on the menu looks tempting. Surprisingly, it turned out very good for us. The udon is the same with Niku Udon but the soup is different as it’s saltier and sweeter, and Beef Kamatama Udon comes with tamago or soft boiled egg. For more comforting taste, we put some spring onions, chili slices, and fried crumbs.

Salmon Teriyaki Udon

For seafood or salmon lovers and those who like the sweeter type of soup, we’ll highly recommend you to try Salmon Teriyaki Udon. It’s udon with teriyaki salmon coated with teriyaki sauce that gives the soup a sweet flavor  The salmon was really fresh with soft texture and rich on teriyaki flavor. For more enjoyment, you can add tamago (soft boiled egg) for IDR 8,500.

Beef Curry Udon

If you’re looking for dry and curry version of udon, this Beef Curry Udon would be just be the one you should have. The beef was juicy and fragrant, as we mentioned above, and topped with curry sauce. The curry sauce was slightly creamy, savory, and bold in flavor.

Tempura & Sushi

As we mentioned before, Tamoya has some tempura and sushi as your side dishes with prices ranging from IDR 8,000 – IDR 25,000. We tried their chicken tender (IDR 12,500), dory katsu (IDR 25,000), and prawn tempura (IDR 14,500), most of them taste good especially the chicken tender with juicy and flavorful meat. For their sushi, California Roll (IDR 15,000), Ebi Tempura Roll (IDR 20,000), and Chicken Teriyaki Roll (IDR 18,000) are as good as well. Moreover, they also have grilled skewers such as chicken skewers, chicken meatballs (tsukune), and chicken skin, but all the grilled skewers were not outstanding for us.

Drinks & Ice Cream

Besides refillable drinks such as ocha, lemon tea, and blackcurrant (IDR 12,000), Tamoya also serves healthy fresh juices ranging from Watermelon, Melon, Carrot, Orange, Apple, Pineapple, Beet, and Pakcoy (IDR 35,000). You also can request to mix two (IDR  38,000) or three (IDR 45,000) of them. For a sweet ending, we’ve tried their Ogura and Green Tea ice cream. We were purely satisfied especially with their green tea ice cream.

Overall, Tamoya offers the delicious and authentic taste of Japanese udon with fresh and high-quality ingredients. We love both their udon’s texture and the soup. Mostly, the dishes were good, proper, and really worth trying. If there are things that need to be improved, we think that they should improve their service and the stock of drinks and toppings. We recommend you to come before 8 PM because there was once when we came around 8.30 PM, and the fried crumbs and lemon tea were out of stock and they didn’t refill it anymore. Even though, we’ll come back for sure!
