U-THAI CAFE & RESTO – Lot 8, SCBD

Thai food is arguably the one of the most popular Southeast Asian food in the world, especially for street food. For its many similarities with many Indonesian foods, especially for the use of ingredients, Thai food is also widely acceptable by Indonesians’ palate. The latest Thai restaurant that we’ve visited is U-Thai Cafe & Resto.

Located at Lot 8 in SCBD area, South Jakarta, U-Thai offers the authentic Thai street food with modern concept and affordable price. The restaurant has a nice interior design with the industrial theme. The using of wooden furniture, black steel chair and table, unfinished brick wall, mural on the wall, and dimmed lighting were pretty nice and eye-catching. It’s such a good place for hangout, small gathering, or even private party with the cozy and casual ambiance.

During our lunch at U-Thai, we’ve tried some of their signature dishes such as Tom Yum Goong, Gai Hoer Bay Toey, Khao Cook Gapi, Nea Peai, Pad Woon Sen, with Khaoniao Mamuang and Luk Chup for dessert. We found out later, the owner of U-Thai is ancestry of Thai and the restaurant supervisor is also Thai, so no wonder if they always maintain the quality of their food and keep the authentic taste of Thai cuisine.

Tom Yum Talay

A Thai meal is not complete without Tom Yum Talay. It’s the most famous soup dishes from Thailand and considered as one of the most famous soup dishes in the world. It’s a traditional sour and spicy soup with fragrant herbs and fresh shrimp (tom yum goong). It was simply nice with authentic tom yum soup and the right amount of spiciness, tanginess, and seasoning. The soup was really refreshing with festive sour and spicy flavor. FYI, it’s also available in chicken version (tom yum gai) for those who has dietary restrictions on shrimp.

Khao Cook Gapi

Another must try when in Thai restaurant. This is a fried rice with shrimp paste and serves with mango salad, salted egg, omelet, sliced chili, lime, and pickles.  It’s pretty nice with the right balancing of salty and savory. FYI, their shrimp paste is freshly homemade and it tastes great!

Nea Peai

Another soup dishes, Nea Peai consists of beef meatballs, beef slices, and steamed bean sprouts in dark beef soup. From all the dishes we’ve tried, Nea Peai is our most favorite! The meatball and beef slices were juicy and tender while the soup is very refreshing and tasty with thick broth and it’s bold of flavor.

Pad Woon Sen

This is fried vermicelli sauteed with meat vegetable. The meat selection is beef (nea), chicken (gai), and shrimp (goong). Taste wise, it is not bad at all but to be honest, this one is not memorable for us.

Khaoniao Mamuang

All time favorite Thai desserts. Khaoniao Mamuang or it’s better known as Mango Sticky Rice is really irresistible. The sweet glutinous rice with fresh mango and coconut milk is such a perfect combination. The mango was fresh and sweet enough, also the coconut milk is not too sweet and give it a more comforting taste.

Luk Chup

With a beautiful, attractive, and colorful appearance, Luk Chup looks like various kinds of fruit and vegetables, such as chilies, cherries, mangosteens, oranges, mangoes, guavas, and starfruits but they are in miniature and filled with mung beans. Simply said, it’s a miniature molded fruit or fruit-shaped mung beans. It tastes sweet and fragrant with soft and chewy texture. In the old days, Luk Chup were the sweetmeats made for the king of Siam to have after meals in the palace.
