OJJU K-FOOD – Gandaria City

After the hype since a few months ago, last weekend we finally went to Ojju K-Food in Gandaria City. Ojju is located at Mainstreet Dining, UG floor of Gandaria City Mall. The restaurant is owned and manages by GF Culinary, the same company group which also owns and manages Fish & Co, Marutama Ramen, Putien, and Song Fa Bak Kut Teh. An important good news for our Moslem friends, Ojju is a Halal restaurant since they don’t serve pork dish.

The restaurant offers a rather different concept of Korean food compared to other Korean restaurants in Jakarta such as Budae Jjigae (Korean army stew), Dosirak (Korean lunch box), Ramyeon, and Rolling Cheese Ribs / Chicken. We did hear that the waiting line is crazy but it turns out that it was really crazy. Fortunately, they separated the waiting list based on pax (1-3 pax, 4-6 pax, and 7 pax or more). There was a long waiting line and at 6 PM, we have to wait on the waiting list of 20 people. After we came out from the restaurant at 8 PM, there are 24 people waiting to dine here. So, beware of the long and crazy queue!

The interior had this warm and industrial vibe to it with majorly wood element applied to the design and furniture, a pop of color was shown by the mural illustration. Overall it was nicely designed, even though the lighting is too yellowish, we love the idea of using the hanging lamps. The minus point is, the place feels cramped and spacing between tables is too close.

Banchan / Side Dishes

There were 4 small free banchan or side dishes provided as complimentary: cream corn, cucumber kimchi, creamy macaroni, and kimchi. Creamy corn was very watery, it wasn’t sweet nor creamy, kimchi was too sour, and macaroni tasted sweet. Not a good start for us.

Chicken Drumstick Rolling Cheese

I bet that everyone is coming to Ojju for their Rolling Cheese since its the main star of Ojju. After Beef Ribs and Chicken Wing, now Ojju have the Chicken Drumstick Rolling Cheese. So, we choose their new addition and give it a try.  Five pcs of chicken drumstick served on a hot plate with mozzarella cheese, corn, jalapeno, potato wedges. For the seasoning, you can choose the spiciness level from mild, spicy, or very spicy. We opted for the spicy one and it’s good, not too spicy.

The chicken drumstick was covered in generous Gochujang or Korean chili paste. And the most fun and best part is when the chicken rolled in cheese! The staff will melt the cheese in front of the customer, roll the cheese on the drumstick, and then serve it immediately. The seasoning was scrumptious, spicy, savory, and slightly sweet while the chicken was very juicy and tender with crispy skin. The sauce has an important role to the flavor, because without the sauce, basically there’s nothing. The sauce was not absorbing to the meat so it tastes quite bland inside.

Anyway, we have to say that even though overall this dish was quite tasty, but somehow we were expecting more from this dish considering the price tag. It’s like you know it’s delicious but before actually trying, you can guess how the flavor is going to turn out and not surprised. Actually, this is not bad at all, but this is just so expected and not special.

Fried Rice

After having the rolling cheese dish, don’t forget to end your meal with fried rice for a complete experience with additional charge IDR 29,000++. The staff will use the remaining cheese from your previous rolling cheese dish to fry the rice with kimchi, seaweed, and egg. You can add extra cheese topping for IDR 32,000++ if you want more. The best part is the heart shaped they made on the center of the pan for the egg.

Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the fried rice as it was seriously lacking flavor. We didn’t experience any savory nor salty flavor. The fried rice is too bland even when it looks as there’s a lot of flavors. Unlike other Korean restaurants, they don’t provide drink as complimentary nor refill drink. You can order the 1.2 liter Corn Tea for IDR 22,000++ to be shared with friends. The tea was lovely with the pleasant roasted aroma.

Overall, dining at Ojju is fun, but not that delicious to live up our expectation. Even though, the concept is unique and very exciting. We suggest you come in a group with friends or family since the portion of the dishes were perfect for sharing. Will we come back in the future? Definitely not if we have to wait for 20+ waiting list queue, but maybe yes if sometimes we craving for something cheesy dishes. Hope we can improve and be better in the future.
