[KOREA] SAEMUL SIKDANG / NEW VILLAGE KOREAN BBQ RESTAURANT (새마을식당) – Hongdae, Seoul

Korean BBQ is a must when in Korea. One of our best findings in #FoodInLoveKOREA is Korean BBQ at Saemul Sikdang / New Village Restaurant (새마을식당). We visited their branch at Hongdae, an area which known as a trendy cafe and nightlife area for students and is well known for its indie scene, urban street arts, and underground musician.

Saemul Sikdang in Seoul is set up as a nice new facility with state of the art barbecue stations and vents that suck up all the smoke. The menu is quite simple, just a few choices of meat and a number of side dishes.

Like any other Korean BBQ restaurants, your order comes with the side dishes such as kimchi, chili pepper, dried seaweed, and lettuce to wrap the barbecued meat.

Messy Pork Belly (Man Shin Chang Sam Gyup Sal)

Actually, they have 4 flavors on the menu (original, mild garlic, sweet soy sauce, and hot spicy flavor. But there is only original flavor that is available. So, we decided to try it out. They use a unique technique to make special cuts through the meat to create a flavorful bite. It was just as good as it looks, tender and flavorful.

Bulgogi Grilled on Briquette

This is the signature and most popular menu at Saemul Sikdang. Thinly sliced pork marinated in a Korean style hot pepper paste. The meat was perfectly delicious and well seasoned. You can enjoy the meat in a vegetable wrap or dip into their special sauce.

Kimchi Jjigae

Next up is Kimchi Stew or Kimchi Jjigae, boiling kimchi with pork. This is also a recommended menu in Saemul Sikdang. Though it’s most often served in a scorching earthenware dish, this was just served in a pot but boasted intensely delicious flavor. Take a spoonful of stew over rice, add some dried seaweed, mix in, and enjoy!

Overall, Saemul Sikdang has a unique and wonderful take on bulgogi and jjigae. Their pork bulgogi and everything on the menu is amazing. It’s definitely a recommended restaurant in Hongdae area.
