[SINGAPORE] LIAO FAN HONG KONG SOYA SAUCE CHICKEN RICE & NOODLE – The World’s Cheapest Michelin-starred Meal at S$ 2!

If you have been following the Michelin Guide Singapore, one of the most striking names besides Hills Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle on the inaugural 2016 list is Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle. This humble hawker stall at Chinatown Complex literally received stardom when it was awarded one Michelin star in the Singapore Michelin Guide 2016 and become the world’s cheapest Michelin meal.

Within one year from the award-winning, now Hawker Chan by Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle (Such a long name. I’ll shorten it to Liao Fan) has opened many branches with restaurant concept in Singapore, Taiwan, and Indonesia. It’s brought to you by Hersing Culinary, the same group who manage Tim Ho Wan.

Its first flagship store opened just last November 2016 at 78 Smith Street, Chinatown Singapore (opposite of Chinatown Complex) with its second outlet located at 18 Tai Seng Street. Expectedly their Jakarta outlet is located at the same location as Tim Ho Wan Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) on its second floor.

It all kicked off years ago when even before certified by the Michelin starred, Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Chicken Rice & Noodle was already a hit at Chinatown Food Complex and the kitchen was helmed by Chan Hon Meng, who is also the owner of the establishment. They got one star in Michelin Guide 2016 and managed to retain it in 2017.

We heard that they are actually used to long queues, but after they got awarded the Michelin star, the queue was unbelievably long and there are also peoples who even queued for 4  hours! Fortunately, in our #FoodInLoveSINGAPORE trip on end of June 2017, we’ve waited for around 45 mins which we consider tolerable for a first-timer to try the cheapest Michelin-starred meal in the world.

By the time it was our turn to order, we ordered their signature Soya Sauce Chicken Rice (S$ 2) and Roasted Pork Rice (S$ 2.5). But unfortunately, the Roasted Pork Rice not available at the moment, so we change to Char Siew Rice (S$ 2.5) since the char siew also looks tempting.

Soya Sauce Chicken Rice

It’s currently the world’s cheapest Michelin meal at S$2! For sure it is beating the record held by Tim Ho Wan and their overrated dim sum (Yes, I don’t like their dim sum, except their Pork Bun, and that’s freaking overprice!). The chicken was extremely fragrant, shiny, and juicy. You’ll even know how tender and soft texture it is by its looks. The generous soya sauce dressing on the rice was certainly a very beautiful. Don’t forget to add some chili, it’s spicy with a hint of sour will boost up the flavor. Honestly, it will be better if served with soup, but maybe this is the best meal you can get in Singapore at S$ 2!

Char Siew Rice

Not inferior to Soya Sauce Chicken, their Char Siew is heaven on earth! The texture was perfect. Tender, juicy, and fatty at the same time. The seasoning was also perfect, it cooks to perfection with bold flavor and nicely dressed with soya sauce.

Overall, it’s a mandatory food when in Singapore! Don’t miss the chance to taste the cheapest Michelin meal in the world, especially get the full experience at their original awarded stall at Chinatown Food Complex. We’re very happy that Michelin would actually take the time to do the research, investigate and awarded deserving eating destination like this.

If you ask is this Michelin-worthy? We said yes! The place and service are out of the topic, but it’s the quality of the food and how consistent they are with it that is really Michelin-worthy as quality always WINS! Will we come back for a long queue? Maybe, but mostly no. There also another good food in Chinatown Complex and not much different in term of taste. Also, you can save your time for sure. But. you really should try this at least once when you’re in Singapore!
