GOPEK RESTAURANT – Grand Indonesia

In Indonesia, Peranakan dishes such as Mie Ayam and Bakso have become Indonesian comfort foods. Despite its popularity, only a few realize that the people of Chinese descent brought these dishes along with their Peranakan Culture. Indonesian Peranakan cuisine has been integrated and adds to the richness of Indonesian culture, a slightly different to Peranakan Cuisine of Malaka and Singapore.

As a company that specializes in serving authentic Indonesian cuisine, Sarirasa Group, a company that also manages Sate Khas Senayan, TeSaTe, and 1945, has launched Gopek Restaurant, a new restaurant brand that serves Indonesian Peranakan cuisine.

The word ‘GOPEK’ originated from the Hokkien language. Meaning 500, the word has been widely used by Indonesian to describe money, the IDR 500 coin. Despite its origin, GOPEK has become a familiar term for all Indonesian, making it easy to remember. In regards to the logo, the shape and structure resemble Chinese coin.

The interior of the restaurant appears with youthfulness and fun through the use of Peranakan element while its fixtures cozy yet trendy setting. The restaurant’s exterior displays a combination of gray and sage green colors, presenting the restaurant as a homey ambiance.

GOPEK’s menu was designed to present, preserve, promote, and elevate Indonesian culinary heritage, by serving Peranakan comfort food. The menu is divided into several sections from appetizers, main courses, and desserts. An important good news for our Moslem friends, GOPEK is a Halal restaurant since they don’t serve pork dish. You will find a wide array of dishes you’re familiar with, such as Lunpia, Bakwan, Mie Ayam, Nasi Campur, Es Kacang, and the restaurant’s signature beverages Sari Alang-Alang and Sugar Cane Juice.

Appetizers

For starter, we had Lunpia and Siomay Campur. Both of them were not bad at all though not special too. The siomay has a chewy texture but the peanut sauce was too smooth and watery while we expect coarse peanut texture.

Nasi Campur Gopek Spesial

As we mentioned before that GOPEK is a Halal restaurant, they serve Indonesian Nasi Campur with no pork no lard. It consists of sapi madu, ayam merah, ngohiong, sate sapi, telur pindang, and semur sapi. This is our favorite dish, both the beef and chicken were tender and well seasoned.

Mie Bakso Pangsit

Similar to other brands from Sarisa Group, GOPEK uses the best and freshest ingredients. Their noodles are made fresh daily. Honestly, we don’t really like the texture of the noodle since it’s too firm and hard. The noodles taste quite bland but the meatballs were good.

Bakwan Bakso

A complete bowl of bakso, bakwan gulung, bakso tahu goreng, bakso goreng, siomay, and sengkel is a great choice. Their thick broth makes it more perfect.

Nasi Goreng Ayam Merah

For a heavier meal, their Nasi Goreng Ayam Merah will be a good choice. The rice was fragrant and had a good seasoning.

Dessert

GOPEK served many Indonesian desserts such as Es Sarang Burung, Es Koteng, Bubur Ketan Hitam, and Bubur Talas. All of them were a perfect sweet treat after having the main course. Our favorite is Es Koteng, it’s made up from sarang burung, bengkoang, jali jali, kitna, selasih, kolang kalik, and jeruk kit. It’s fresh and sweet with a hint of citrus flavor.

Beverages

As for beverages, the restaurant’s signature Jus Tebu Kiamboy Lemon and Sari Alang Alang Leci Mint are the best. It’s had a refreshing flavor with the combination twist of sweet and sour.

Overall, Gopek Restaurant serves a wide variety of Indonesian iconic Peranakan street food. It’s affordable price and swanky design interior add more reasons for young food enthusiast to visit Gopek. Last but not least, congratulations for the grand opening of Gopek Restaurant on 8 August 2017 at Grand Indonesia Sky Bridge Lv.5!
