[SINGAPORE] MAKANSUTRA GLUTTONS BAY – Esplanade

Local street food is a must try when you visit Singapore. One of the best places to enjoy Singapore local street food is in Makansutra, a Food Center with a large number of hawkers to indulge in a variety of local street food such as satay, chili crab, oyster omelet, and fried carrot cake. Makansutra Glutton’s Bay gives diners a taste of local food with a spectacular view of the Marina Bay skyline. Unlike typical hawker centers, sampler sets are offered for those who want to try everything but simply don’t have the stomach space to! And the most eye-catching food sample is: Chili Crab !!!

Located just off the Esplanade, you can go to Makansutra by MRT, drop at Esplanade Station and take exit D (via Theater on the Bay).  Actually, you also can stop at City Hall or Marina Bay Station, but I think the nearest station is Esplanade, even you need to walk around 10-15 minutes through Esplanade Mall. For more detail information, you can see the map at the end of this post.

I have come to Makansutra for 2 times. The first time I came at night and the second in the afternoon when they just open at 5 pm. I came with 3 of my friends and we ordered some dishes to share. And these are the dishes that we try:

Chicken Wing from Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing & Carrot Cake

Actually, I don’t like the chicken wing, and I tried this one because of the recommendation from my friends. When looking to their stall, the appearance of their chicken wing is very tempting. The uncle grill the chicken wing in large quantities at once. And surprisingly, it tastes crazily good! Really juicy, tender, and full of nice seasonings.

As I read on their website, this is one stall that takes great pride and effort in making the best-barbecued chicken wings for their customers. Both marinade and chili sauce is made from scratch using best ingredients and only chicken wings from Brazil make the cut as they are chunkier and juicier. For the marinade, more than 10 types of ingredients and 10 hours long of marination are required. They are especially particular in selecting the chili to make a chili sauce that stands out from their peers.

No doubt, it’s super recommended !!! (Price: S$ 1.50 / pcs)

Fried Carrot Cake

Ordered from the same vendor of chicken wings, this fried carrot cake also tastes very good! Honestly, I never try carrot cake before. LOL.. But seriously, you must try this one, the carrot cake was soft and have a balanced sweet and salty taste. You can choose the portion size when you order, there is small / medium / large. (Price: S$ 4 / 6 / 8)

Char Kway Teow from Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee

The stall is located right next to the chicken wing stall. To be honest, the tastes is standard, but I like their pork sausage. There are many char kway teow in Jakarta which tastes better than this.

Roasted Chicken Rice from Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice

This one tastes delicious, but nothing special. You can get the same tastes like this in another food center at a cheaper price.

Pineapple Fried Rice from Thai Yummy Food

We ordered this large size of Pineapple Fried Rice to share (Price: S$ 12). The portion was generous (i think it can be shared for 5 people), but the taste was flavorless. I don’t think that I’m eating fried rice and don’t know why they named it with Pineapple because it just tastes like plain yellow rice. I don’t think it is worth the S$ 12 price tag. There also the small and medium size that you can order with S$ 8 and S$ 10 price tag.

Mee Goreng from Old Satay Club Mee Goreng

The stall’s signature Mee Goreng (Fried Noodle) is prepared in both Indian and Malay style. The Malay version is dry and fried with sambal belacan while the Indian version is a tad moist and does away with belacan but instead uses a special chili blend.

I like this Malay style Mee Goreng, it tastes a little bit spicy and sweet yet delicious. The seasoning was very strong and looks like Malay-style which can be seen from its reddish color. It tastes good but not my favorite.

Soto Mee from Alhambra Padang Satay

Although Alhambra was famous for its satay, their soto mee is also tasted good. With the addition of chili in soy sauce gave it the right sharp flavor and the soup was savory.

IMG_3239

Shaved Ice from The Sweet Spot

It tastes like another shaved ice that you can find anywhere else and nothing special.

FYI, this is the complete list of hawker stalls in Makansutra:

  • The Gluttons Bar
  • The Sweet Spot
  • Alhambra Padang Satay
  • Old Satay Club Mee Goreng
  • Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice
  • Huat Huat BBQ Chicken Wing & Carrot Cake
  • Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee
  • Soon Lee Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee
  • Gerry’s Grill
  • Redhill Rong Guang B.B.Q. Seafood
  • Thai Yummy Food
  • Botak Joe Ngoh Hiang

Overall, Makansutra is a delightful place for a meal, especially at night, because that’s when the breeze from the waters nearby come in, and nothing beats local food accompanied by the natural breeze. We love their open-air concept with a spectacular view of the Marina Bay skyline, so no wonder if it’s always packed with tourists. The price tag was a little bit pricey compared to another food center in Singapore with more delicious taste, but it’s worth to try… 😀
