The National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂) is a national monument, landmark, and tourist attraction erected in memory of Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. On our last trip to Taipei, we visited Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (CKS Memorial Hall) that is located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a gigantic memorial landmark in Taipei. The overall structure and courtyard that it’s part of are gigantic. In addition, there is the National Opera House and the National Concert Hall (This is the location where we tried the best Bubble Tea in Taiwan). Unfortunately, during our visit, there was an exhibition in the main hall and the weather was very gloomy, so it difficult for us to take a good picture.
The Memorial Hall is white with four sides. The roof is blue and octagonal, a shape that picks up the symbolism of the number eight, a number traditionally associated in Asia with abundance and good fortune. Two sets of white stairs, each with 89 steps to represent Chiang’s age at the time of his death, lead to the main entrance.
The main attraction at CKS Memorial Hall is watching the elaborate changing of the guard ceremony which happens every hour on the hour from 10 AM to 4 PM. If you are short of time, just make sure you are on the 4th Floor of the main building to see the changing of Guards at every hour sharp. The ceremony will only take around 15 minutes.
After watching the guard changing ceremony, we continue to downstair to ground level. There is memorial houses a library and museum documenting Chiang Kai-shek’s life and career and exhibits related to Republic of China era Chinese history, and Taiwan’s history and development.
The museum also exhibited personal items (clothes, car, accessories, etc.) that have been used by the president Chiang Kai-shek. While in Taiwan’s history exhibition displayed the history and construction process of CKS Memorial Hall and Taiwan’s history.
Overall, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a nice place to visit in Taipei. It’s a historical landmark in order to commemorate the memory of the great leader Chiang Kai-shek and where the visitor can see the exhibition of Taiwan’s history and development.
