Korean dessert craze started happening in Indonesia the last few years. It can be largely attributed to Sulbing (설빙) Korean Dessert Cafe, a famous Korean dessert cafe which originated in Busan, South Korea. If you head to downtown Seoul, it’s almost impossible to miss a Sulbing outlet, since they expanded to an enormous 490 franchise outlets in only one year. They claim to be “The Original Dessert Café Enterprise”, and most Bingsu cafes and items you see now, are in fact copied from / inspired by them.
Sulbing means “snow ice” in Korean (hanja: 雪冰). Just like any other Korean cafes, Sulbing practices ‘self-service policy’. Once you order, the cashier will give you a buzzer. Claim your order when the buzzer vibrates and lights up. And after enjoying your dessert, put the tray on the tray rack or just leave it at the pick -up counter. The place itself is designed very well with the simply modern design and warm lightings like others cafe or coffee shop.

During our #FoodInLoveKOREA autumn trip in November 2016, we visit Sulbing outlet in Myeongdong and give a try to their bingsu. It’s already the end of autumn, but the freezing weather didn’t stop us and many people from having a cold dessert. It can be seen that every branch of this cafe chain is always packed with people.
Premium Mango Choco Snowflake Sherbet (KRW 11,000)
A bowl of Sulbing looks very similar to the familiar bingsu, but instead of shaved ice, the white crystal flakes in your bowl are frozen milk, making your dessert sweeter and creamier. It is similar to shaved ice, but the ice is shaved so thin like snow. None of that crunchy texture, but a powder of snow that just melts in your mouth! It’s so delish! Coconut milk and cheesecake are served atop apple mango, the best quality mango. You can really taste the mango’s soft, delicious flavor and not too sweet
Real Tong Tong Melon Sulbing (KRW 13,000)
It contains sweet red beans, chewy rice cake, and crispy cereals in a fresh musk melon. It also comes with condensed milk which you drizzle on top to add sweetness to your dessert. Actually, this one is not our favorite, but the best part is the appearance looks magnificent and photogenic. You can cut the melon by yourself and there is the topping inside. We think the snow ice is too much and it’s better for you to give it more condensed milk to add the sweetness.
Overall, Sulbing offers many Korean dessert and drinks and their specialty is Bingsu. Our favorite is Mango Bingsu, since we are big fans of mango and it’s combined perfectly with cheesecake. But to be honest, we really think that it’s very pricey. That is too many snowflakes than the toppings and it’s not worth the price tag. But if you’re heading to Seoul, we highly recommend you to try it at least once in your life. Savor every bite of your frozen Korean dessert while ignoring the freezing temperatures outside. Aside from the snowflake sherbet, Sulbing also has other desserts like toast and bread, smoothies, coffee and Korean drinks. The prices range from KRW 4,500 – 13,000 for desserts, and KRW 3,500 – 5,800 for drinks.
How to getting there:
By subway: Take exit 8 at Myeongdong Station, turn left and walk straight. You will go past Shinhan Bank. Continue walking for about 5 minutes until you see the cafe at the hook on your left side (located on the 2nd floor).
