Characterized by being spicy, full of chilies, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, and an assortment of jungle herbs and vegetables, plus seafood and meat, Nasi Padang has gained a reputation across Indonesia for being some of the most flavorful of all. Last weekend, FOOD IN LOVE visited Kasiko Padang, a Padangnese restaurant at Setiabudi One, Jakarta.
Kasiko Padang restaurant located on the 1st floor of Setiabudi One, home to a wide range of delectable cuisine in South Jakarta. The interior if the restaurant is well designed like the typical Padangnese restaurant with the using of wooden furniture.
Many Padang dishes are curry dishes, but you’ll also find boiled dishes with sambal (chili sauce), deep fried seafood and also grilled dishes. The assortment and flavor combinations are mind blowing. The serving style in Kasiko Padang is a typical Padangnese restaurant where they serve all of the menus on the table, then you just pay for what you eat.
Beef Rendang
The most favorite choice in Padang restaurant is undoubtedly the beef rendang. Kasiko Padang’s version of beef rendang is certainly good! The beef was tender enough with bold and rich spices cooked to perfection.
Ayam Pop
One of the iconic dishes in Padangnese restaurant is Ayam Pop. The chicken is cooked in coconut milk, it might look plain and simple but the taste is incredible, to be honest. The chicken was soft and juicy, cooked in coconut milk for extra savory taste and a bit of sweet aftertaste. It’s served with special chili sauce made with more than 10 ingredients resulting in a very complex taste but in a good point.
Ayam Gulai
Chicken curry or Ayam Gulai was also one of our favorite in Kasiko Padang. The curry sauce was fantastic. Full of creamy coconut milk, turmeric, and with flavors of chilies, lemongrass, and maybe some ginger in there as well.
Ikan Tenggiri Balado
The mackerel in typical Padangnese chili sauce or balado. It consists of king mackerel or ikan tenggiri and sambal balado which made up from chili, lime leaves, lemon grass, turmeric, ginger, and galangal. The fish itself was a little hard but the sambal balado was good.
Gulai Kikil
For “kikil” (cow’s cartilage) lovers, you might consider trying this menu. It tastes very nice with a rich and flavorful “gulai” broth.
Telor Dadar
This is a dish commonly sold in Padangnese restaurant. Whenever we do not have anything to order, we will order this dish. The name of the dish Telor Dadar or literally translated as egg omelet. The thick egg omelet consists of chili, some herbs be it celery, leek, spring onion or coriander leaves. It tastes like any other telor dadar and nothing special.
For extra pleasure and complete Padangnese meal experience, the other side dishes like Perkedel (IDR 11k), Sayur Singkong / cassava leaves (IDR 10k), Sayur Kol (IDR 10k), Sambal Goreng Kentang (IDR 20k), Sambal Ijo/ Merah (IDR 10 k), etc. should not be missed.
Overall, Kasiko Padang restaurant offers a good experience to enjoy the Padangnese cuisine. In term of taste, some were good and some still need improvement. Hope they can do better in the future since their offering higher price than the typical Padangnese restaurant.
