Gogung (고궁) is a famous restaurant in Myeongdong and famous for their… yes, Bibimbap. Specifically, they feature Jeonju (전주) style bibimbap. Jeonju is a city located in the center of South Korea and is famous for iteration of this dish. As far as we can tell, Jeonju style bibimbap simply features a more diverse variety of vegetables.
During our #FoodInLoveKOREA trip, we arrived here for lunch around 11 AM, and it’s almost full of people. There was a full menu, but really there were only two main choices on the menu, Jeonju style bibimbap in a gold metal bowl and dolsot bibimbap (돌솥 비빔밥) served in a flaming hot earthenware bowl. The menu has also written in English, so it’s easy to order.

Jeonju Dolsot Bibimbap
Bibimbap is a famous local dish of rice with vegetables. As we mentioned before, dolsot bibimbap served in a hot stone pot. It arrived on our table with a rainbow colorful array of toppings over rice. The stone pot is served just off the stove so that the rice is still popping when it arrives at the tables. This allows the rice rimming the pot to slightly burn, giving it a distinctly awesome flavor and texture.
Try to resist mixing everything for a minute to let the rice burn longer, but don’t let it too long to start mixing it up to prevent the bottom from getting burnt. The rice was slightly crispy, and the veggies and sauces all had excellent flavor. The sauce was a sweet chili paste (gochujang) and there was an excellent flavor of sesame oil in the mix.
Namul Bibimbap
Unlike the dolsot bibimbap, namul bibimbap served in an ordinary bowl. It also consists of rice and topped with the cooked vegetables such as cucumber, mushrooms, bean sprouts, lettuce, and sesame seeds. To be honest, we don;t like this one since it’s too much vegetable and no chili paste at all like the dolsot bibimbap. Anyway, the soup on the side is Bean Sprout Soup (공나물국).
Overall, Gogung (고궁) is one of the traditional restaurants that serves authentic Jeonju style Bibimbap. The dolsot bibimbap (돌솥 비빔밥) was excellent, but it was also very expensive. They preserve the genuine taste of its main branch in Jeonju, as well as providing a suitable taste and ambiance for foreign visitors since it is located in Myeongdong. Gogung is a really nice restaurant, the food is delicious, and the experience is great, but overall, it’s very pricey for what it is.
How to getting there:
Take exit 10 of Myeongdong Station (Subway Line 4), go straight for 30m towards Migliore. The restaurant is located behind Sejong Hotel.
