[KOREA] CHICKEN & CURRY GOON (치킨앤 카레군) – Hongdae, Seoul

Fried chicken is undoubtedly one of the most common food that you can find in Seoul. There are a lot of fried chicken chain with their various specialties. It’s also very hard to find a chicken that clearly outshines the rest because the industry there is so well developed. Most of them offer Chimaek (Fried Chicken and Beer), but we found Chicken & Curry Goon (치킨앤 카레군) in Hongdae area that offers a different style of Korean Fried Chicken.

Stay true with their namesake, their specialties are Chicken with Curry, although they also have the typical Chimaek such as Garlic Chicken and Hot Chicken. During our #FoodInLoveKOREA trip, we visited Chicken and Curry Goon after having a Korean BBQ lunch at New Village restaurant, which is also located in Hongdae.

The place was quite small and pretty modern than other typical fried chicken shop in Seoul. We found out later, they just opened since last 2 years. The shop is well designed with more modern and younger concept and dominated by yellow and blue color.

Before decided to order, we asked the waiter if we could only order 1 meal. Because mostly in all Korean restaurant, one person must order at least 1 item and you are not allowed to order for less than the number of people. Fortunately, the waiter said yes and since we just had lunch before, we only ordered their signature Rose Chicken (KRW 22,800). After ordered, you’ll be given a welcome snack with pickled radish cubes and drinks.

Fist impression, the portion was generous (it’s fit for 2-3 people) with a beautiful presentation. It’s actually a fried chicken topped with fries and curry sauce. The fried chicken has some sort of curry rub that gave the chicken a bolder flavor than most fried chicken while the meat is extremely moist and tender. It’s just so natural tasting without being overly cooked.

Equally satisfying were the french fries and curry sauce. Each fry had a satisfying crispy outer shell with just the right texture of potato inside. It was fluffy and tasted like eating a tiny mashed potato. The curry cream was also great, it’s savory and bold of curry flavor with the right level of creaminess.

Overall, we’re thoroughly impressed by the combination of textures and flavors. Their chicken and curry were different compared than any other fried chicken in Seoul. Although the way this is a little bit pricey, it’s still worth to try considering the taste and its portion, which even more worth mentioning the heavy food than the snacks.
