In the midst of the many contemporary things, the classic and the legend has always had its own place. Some of you may be familiar with the name of Tan Goei, especially for those who live in Semarang. Tan Goei is an old restaurant that first opened in 1950 in Semarang and then opened their branch in Jakarta in 1960 at Jalan Besuki, Menteng.
Tan Goei has been running for years by 3 generations of family and now it has evolved into the new and more modern concept in a new brand, Heritage by Tan Goei. Heritage as a modern way of Tan Goei to serve not only old generation but also the millennial generation and young people. Tan Goei is actually the surname of the owner’s family and has been a family business ever since, and now the chef in Heritage is a grandchild of Mr. Tan and Mrs. Goei.
Located at Jalan Teuku Cik Di Tiro, Menteng, across of Lara Djonggrang, the restaurant designed with more cozy ambiance yet with the classical touch and some instagenic spot with outdoor seating.
Tan Goei is actually an Indo-Dutch cuisine restaurant where they offer classic and traditional dishes. But now, Heritage by tan Goei comes with more fresh and new concept. They also added new menu selection to attract more customers from the younger generation but they still keep the legacy of their signature dishes.
Green Papaya Salad
This salad consists of fried calamari, green papaya, kyuri, peanuts, coriander, and Thai dressing. The fried calamari was crispy and well combined with Thai dressing.
Warm Chicken Roulade Salad
One of the new menu from Heritage with chicken roulade, baby potatoes, gremolata, green beans, mixed greens, and oriental dressing. It’s a yummy yet healthy choices for starter, especially for their juicy chicken roulade.
Truffle Cream Gnocchi
House-made gnocchi with sauteed mushroom, green peas, and truffle oil. It’s thick, creamy, savory, and goes better with the truffle.
Pink Salmon
For another pasta selection, the Pink Salmon will be a nice idea. It was a good combination of sliced salmon, spaghetti, tomato, and cream sauce.
Middle Eastern Meatballs
It’s a buttered rice topped with 125 gr meatballs, homemade cumin tomato sauce, coriander, and garlic. The rice was fragrant and fluffy while the meatballs were juicy and flavorful.
Bistik Ikan
One of Tan Goei’s classic hotpot, bistik ikan consists of 135gr barramundi and classic Tan Goei’s butter sauce. It’s also served with brown buttered veggies and potato steak with herb butter. The fish was fresh, meaty and pan-fried perfectly with delightful crunchy texture on the skin and perfectly combined with the butter sauce.
Chicken Burger
As a new addition to the western menu in Heritage, chicken served with pulled bbq chicken, cucumber salad, and house cut fries. The pulled bbq chicken was well seasoned but the cucumber is not our favorite. Maybe it will better if comes with lettuce and mayo sauce.
Ox Tongue Burger
With two big fat slices of ox tongue, aioli, egg, pickled veggies, Vietnam dressing, and house cut fries, this ox tongue burger was much better than the chicken burger. The ox tongue was extremely tender, nicely seasoned and savory. They surely know how to cook ox tongue nicely, and well it turned out to be really good.
Pan-seared Salmon
The garlic buttered rice with 135 gr of salmon and charred corn salsa topping. Well, it was simply delicious with fresh and meaty salmon. The corn salsa also become a good companion for the salmon and garlic buttered rice.
Oxtail Bourguignon
From all dishes we’ve tried, the Oxtail Bourguignon is the best of the best! It’s a braised oxtail with mashed potatoes, caramelized shallots, and shimeji mushroom. The oxtail was extremely juicy and tender while the mashed potatoes were soft and flavorful. They surely know how to cook beef ox tongue nicely, and well it turned out to be really good. It’s a great combination actually, both the oxtail, sauce, and mashed potatoes were complementing each other nicely.
Chicken Picatta
Chicken piccata is nothing more than chicken breast cutlets, dredged in flour, browned, and served with a sauce of butter, lemon, capers, fondant potatoes, and mixed greens. Honestly, we don;t really like it since the chicken was not juicy and crispy.
Drinks
As for drinks, we’ve tried Passion Fruit & Yakult Breeze, Strawberry & Banana Smoothies, and Ice White. The drinks were truly refreshing, especially the Passion Fruit & Yakult Breeze, and the coffee was also not bad at all.
Overall, Heritage by Tan Goei had a wide variety and great option of dishes. All of the dishes were delicious and nicely executed, especially for their classic Dutch and Indonesian dishes. They also did a great job in keeping the heritage while bringing new fresh modern touch that not only keeps their loyal customers but also the younger generation.
