[THAILAND] ASIATIQUE THE RIVERFRONT, BANGKOK – Travel Diary

Shopping in Bangkok is an experience to thrill and delight the most discerning of shoppers, whatever it is you’re looking for. From the gleaming chrome and towering size of modern, air-conditioned malls, to the hustle and bustle of its famously buzzing street markets, Bangkok has all kinds of places to blow your money. One of the best places to enjoy a great shopping experience is Asiatique the Riverfront.

Asiatique The Riverfront is the largest waterfront themed open-air retail and lifestyle mall in Bangkok, Thailand. It occupies the former docks of the East Asiatic Company and faces the Chao Phraya River and Charoen Krung Road. Asiatique has successfully combined two of the most popular shopping experiences in the city, a night bazaar and a mall. The complex opened in 2012 after the extensive renovation of the site.

Located just off the Chao Phraya river, It is a mix of Asian, American and European food and shopping, as well as entertainment. This area used to belong to the Danish Ostindiske Kompani in the old days, and their old storage buildings have now been converted into cafes, restaurants, pubs, and shops with over 1,500 boutiques and 40 restaurants housed under a huge replica warehouse complex.

The easiest and fastest way to get there is by boat. Just take the BTS to Saphan Taksin and jump on the free shuttle at the end of the pier. It only takes ten minutes, and the boat runs until 11 PM. From the boat, you step off onto a long boardwalk which runs for 300 meters that look romantic once the sun has set.

The best part in Asiatique for us is definitely the food scene. Upscale dining selection can be found in the Waterfront District, with smart Italian, Thai and seafood restaurants. This is the place where you have many restaurant selections for dinner at the riverfront and enjoying the breeze with a beautiful view of Chao Phraya river.

Waterfront District lies along Asiatique’s waterfront promenade which claimed to be Bangkok’s longest at 300 meters and includes several riverside restaurants, a large event space used for concerts, festivals and New Year celebrations, and Asiatique Sky, the tallest Ferris wheel in Bangkok at 60 meters.

Overall, Asiatique The Riverfront mainly has a tourist focus, where you can find Thai products and design, some of it you also find at Chatuchak Weekend Market. But it is a really cool touristy market, which is also very popular among Thais. Who doesn’t love Paris wheel, Italian gelato ice cream, and 4D cinema? Asiatique is great fun!
