If you find an eatery that only sells one single item on their menu, then they are probably outstanding or the best place to enjoy that kind of dish. In this post, we’re going to share a legend and our favorite place to enjoy Nasi Campur.
Have you ever eat nasi campur (Chinese mixed rice)? In general, there is two famous nasi campur style in Jakarta, Pontianak style, and Medan style. But there is another one that we like best, that is Nasi Campur Singkawang.
There is a little restaurant which is selling this kind of food, and in Jakarta, you can find the best Nasi Campur Singkawang at Nasi Campur Kong Hu Pay. It is a Kong Hu eatery and the owner is Indonesian Chinese descendant. There are many ethnics in Chinese people; one of them is kong hu, most of these people were born and grew in Pontianak or Singkawang city, Central Kalimantan (Borneo). One of their famous favorite foods is Nasi Campur (mixed rice).
Originated from Singkawang, Nasi Campur Kong Hu Pay has been in Jakarta for decades and have moved several times. Now they’re located at Jalan Gunung Sahari Raya, North Jakarta and also opened a branch in Sunter. Kong Hu Pay located just on the roadside, no signage but there is a banner in front of the restaurant. The place is very humble and pretty small, may only accommodate about 15 peoples. But don’t judge the book by its cover, right?
As we have mentioned above, there is only one menu in Kong Hu Pay, that’s Nasi Campur Kong Hu (Singkawang style mixed rice). In general, nasi campur is made from ordinary rice with pork and chicken meat all mix together with special sauce on a single plate.
Nasi campur Kong Hu is a little bit different from other nasi campur. Generally, the main dishes in Chinese nasi campur is consist of sweet roasted pork, salty roasted pork, egg, roasted or steamed chicken. But in this nasi campur Kong Hu (or Pontianak style) here are also boiled blood pork and served with thick soup. Which is make this food very special is also the chili sauce. They use terasi (a condiment made from pounded and fermented shrimp or small fish) from Kalimantan for the chili sauce.
The plus point of Nasi Capur Kong Hu Pay compared with another Kalimantan style nasi campur is they use dark soy thick soup and angkak (red yeast rice) soup while the others used clear soup. It gives more flavor, especially the dark soy thick soup that perfectly matched with porky toppings.
They give a generous amount of toppings consisting pork charsiu, crispy roasted pork, pork sausage, roasted chicken, cukiok (pork feet stew), and egg. The crispy roasted pork and pork charsiu here was also great, although not outstanding. For maximum pleasure, don’t forget to order Badak (sarsaparilla drink from Medan) to accompany your Nasi Campur. The regular portion cost us IDR 44,000 while the small portion is IDR 38,000.
Overall, Nasi Campur Kong Hu Pay is a real hidden gem and the best Nasi Campur in Jakarta for us. If you’re looking to eat Nasi Campur, please give them a try and we sure you won’t be disappointed (unless you’re a fan of Medan style Nasi Campur since they have different taste). Their dark soy thick soup is like a magic and maybe it’s the reason why Nasi Campur Kong Hu Pay is outstanding for us.
