Tonkatsu is one of the most beloved “western style” Japanese foods in Japan. There are a lot of Japanese restaurants in Jakarta, but not many specialize in Katsu or Japanese deep fried dish. Recently, we visited Katsutoku, the first and only katsu-specialized Japanese restaurant in Indonesia to offer you the art of delicious cutlet.
Actually, we’ve visited Katsusei Delicious Cutlet in Plaza Senayan a few years ago to try their famous Tonkatsu. When we arrived, we just found out that Katsusei outlet has been changed the name into Katsutoku, but the outlet and their menu are still exactly the same.
Katsutoku located in Plaza Senayan, or Sentral Senayan Basement 1 to be exact. You can find the entrance to Sentral Senayan from inside The Food Hall. This is the deserted section where it’s mostly Japanese restaurant there. The place is not too big and the space between tables are narrow making the room feel cramped if it’s crowded.
Katsutoku serves katsu in different variants, ranging from pork, curry, chicken, prawn, and oyster. They take pride in using Japanese traditional method of preparing and cooking tonkatsu. The secret to tender and flavorful pork lies in the natural way of aging the meat, combined with the formulated tonkatsu sauce, the sour and savory tasting sauce with fragrant toasted sesame seeds is an art in itself.

The portion is actually super big. Pork is also thick and it’s below all that egg with sauce, so don’t expect it to be crispy! Don’t forget to grind some sesame seeds and mix it with their signature sauce (this is dabomb!) and then dip the katsu into it for an extra flavor kick. The pork is not as juicy as we expected, but the egg and sauce are tasty and flavorful. The set consists of steamed rice, shredded cabbage, pickles, and tonjiru (pork) or miso soup. We opted for tonjiru soup it tastes good. The broth was savory and rich in flavor.
Pork Sirloin Katsu Set
From the first time you set your eyes upon their katsu, you can see the perfectly fried golden breadcrumbs with its subtle shine and when you bite into it, you can definitely hear the crunching sounds of the breadcrumbs crumbling against your teeth. Besides having crunchy texture on the outside, it’s also very important to maintain the juiciness of the meat while making sure that the katsu is not greasy and Katsutoku did it very well. Same like Pork Sirloin Katsu Nabe set, the pork is not juicy and not outstanding but their tonkatsu sauce helps it all.
Overall, we really appreciate the dedication of Katsutoku to serve the best tonkatsu, using Japanese traditional method of preparing and cooking tonkatsu with its authentic taste. To be honest, their food was just okay, not bad but not outstanding. Their deep fried till perfection is a good point, but in the other hands, the price is a bit on the high side compared to the food which is not that outstanding.
