I’m pretty sure you all would agree that Nasi Padang (literally translates to Padang rice, but meaning Padang food) has become the country’s most famous contribution to Indonesian cuisine. You can easily find Nasi Padang in every corner of the city and of course, I’ve tried hundreds of them. So, what’s the special from this Padang restaurant so I share it on the blog? SPICY! Yes, this is the spiciest Nasi Padang that I’ve tried.
The first time you eat Nasi Padang, especially if you love powerful spices and flavors, will be an incredibly memorable experience. Padang restaurants are Indonesia’s answer to the call for delicious but inexpensive rice-based chow, competing with Malaysia’s Nasi Kandar, Singapore’s hawker cuisine, or India’s Nasi Biryani.
RM. Siang Malam located at Jalan Angkasa, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. They are open 24 hours and all dishes are fresh and complete all day long. So, in case you’re hungry and looking for a heavy meal at midnight, this place will be a good choice.
You’ll know a Padang restaurant by the plates of food stacked up in the shop window. These dishes are either selected from the window, or chosen from a menu, or simply brought by a waiter to your table without prompting. The food is always served with a generous helping of rice.
RM. Siang Malam has a lot of dishes and considerably very complete (not the most complete I’ve visited though). For example, the chicken, they have fried chicken, grilled chicken, curry chicken, and chicken balado. It will be perfect if they have Ayam Pop too.
Like I said earlier in this post, the specialty that makes RM. Siang Malam outstanding for me is its spiciness. Mostly I found Padang restaurants serve a mild spicy for the gravy or chili, but here anything is spicy, literally spicy! From gravy to chili, and they have two kinds of chili, sambal balado or red chili and green chili (the most common you found in Padang restaurant).
I’ve regularly visited this restaurant and the item I have ordered the most is fried chicken (with its seasoning which gives a salty flavor), rendang (with its gravy of course), kuah cincang (the spiciest gravy), and sambal balado. Every gravy and chili could be spicy (or very spicy), and the strongest and most powerful kick for me is coming from their kuah cincang. It’s rich with herbs and spices.
Overall, we argue whether the foods here is delicious or not, (honestly, I found a better fried chicken and rendang in other Padang restaurant), but the herb and spice are very strong, unlike domesticated Minang restaurants. If you’re spicy lovers, then I highly recommended this place for you.
