All you can eat BBQ is always satisfying, especially with great meat and a wide selection of buffet. While mostly Asian and Western AYCE BBQ restaurants out there, here I wanna share a rather different and unique recommendation, Tucano’s Churrascaria Brazilian BBQ & Buffet in Sudirman area, Jakarta.
Last weekend, I’ve visited Tucano’s Churrascaria to try authentic Brazilian style cuisine and Churrasco. Tucano’s located at Pavilion Retail Arcade, next to Citywalk Sudirman, Central Jakarta. It is not difficult to find since they are visible from the street thanks to the bright orange signage. Tucano’s is situated in the outer area of the building, so you can directly access the restaurant from the parking lot.
Tucano’s occupies a large dining area, which is perfect for a big family, corporate, or group gathering, with a large buffet stand in the center of the restaurant. It has an elegant fine dining decor with a great atmosphere and looks sophisticated but still simple in the same way. What a perfect ambiance!
Tucano’s serves both in a la carte and AYCE buffet dishes specializes in churrasco. Churrasco is a traditional Brazilian style BBQ refers to all kinds of meat, from beef, pork, to chicken that’s skewered and grilled on a spitfire. There’s an open kitchen where you can see a variety of slow-roasted meat rotisserie-style over charcoal to lock in the juiciness and flavor.
In a churrascaria, a place where meat is cooked in churrasco style, the serving concept is quite unique where restaurants servers provide an endless supply of grilled meat cuts directly to the patron’s table. The waiters will move around the restaurant with the skewers and slicing meat onto the customer’s plate as requested by the famous Tucano’s cue. You’ll get 3 signs with a different color for you to put in the table: green means asking for meat, yellow means asking for Pineapple, red means stop/enough food.
The green token on top means you want the meat to be served to you, so as long as it stays on top of the letter T, the meat will keep coming. To keep the authenticity of flavor, Tucano’s head chef, Mr. Aldecy Da Silva Bastos comes all the way from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ok, let’s start with the buffet first. The buffet features both Brazilian and American specialties, providing a fusion of distinct flavors, textures, and colors. The buffet selections include the Tucanos House Salad, hearts of palm, shrimp, chicken wings, seasonal fruit selections, fresh mozzarella, sauces, soups, and many other items.
Hot selections such as seasoned rice, pasta, potatoes, stroganoff, feijoada (a traditional black bean stew) and freshly made soups including lobster bisque are also available on the buffet to accompany the meat selections.
All salad ingredients are fresh and tasteful. You can eat salad like Brazilian people just before their meal or you can eat with bread and potatoes.
Since this is included in the AYCE package, you can grab whatever you want, but I suggest you skip this area to save your stomach for the best part, an endless supply of grilled meat! If you still want to try some highlights from the buffet, I recommend you to Beef Stroganoff, Brazilian Fish Stew, and Sticky Rice Pudding for dessert. That items are so good and worth to try, especially because these desserts are rarely found in Jakarta.
Besides the buffet, one item that you MUST TRY is their Garlic Bread. It is really, really outstanding. The best garlic bread I’ve ever tried. The bread has a soft texture, topped with fresh herbs, tons of flavorful garlic, and toasted to perfection.
Now, let’s go deeper for the restaurant’s main highlight, the Churrasco! Supposedly you’ll get kinds of churrasco including Picanha, Alcatra, Garlic Beef, Spicy Beef, Sausage, Hump, Chicken Heart, Chicken Leg, and Grilled Pineapple.
All the meat area amazingly good, very well seasoned, so juicy and tender. Trust me you won’t need any seasoning or dipping sauce whatsoever to enjoy the meat to the fullest.
Alcatra
The alcatra (top sirloin cut) from the Australian Black Angus Beef became a whole new slice of sirloin. The smell of smoke on the meat, with the right amount of seasoning, and its tenderness, it tasted amazing.
Picanha
One of their favorite most popular cuts, this prime part of the sirloin is served seasoned with sea salt or flavor with garlic. The very best meat. Hands down to this prime sirloin cut from this Australian Black Angus Beef. The meat was really juicy, tender, and with some fat on, the picanha is a must for anyone who wants to experience the Brazilian barbecue tradition. It was so tender, juicy and full of flavor with amazing grilled aroma.
Garlic Beef & Spicy Beef
Australian Black Angus Beef is fully marinated with garlic. It smelled good and full of flavor. If you love spicy, you can opt for their spicy beef.
Hump
Beef hump (cupim) is a rich, marbled, soft, tender and tasty beef cut unique to the zebu cattle, which has evolved its hump to aid its survivability in hot and dry climates. Hump has no blood and juice, and is found almost exclusively in Brazilian cuisine. It is seasoned with rock salt and grilled low and slow for 5-6 hours, leaving a comfortable sensation in the mouth.
Chicken Leg, Chicken Heart, and Sausage
Grilled Chicken Leg & Sausage are never the wrong choices, it was well seasoned and incredibly juicy, especially the chicken leg. I like it so much! As for the chicken heart, I don’t really like it since I’m not a fan of chicken heart.
Grilled Pineapple
Besides the meat, don’t forget to put the yellow coin up for grilled pineapple. The pineapple was simply grilled and came with cinnamon powder on it. It tasted so delicious and good to neutralize my palate before eating different meat. It is uber sweet and juicy with lovely caramelized aroma, best enjoyed between meat since the refreshing taste can clean the palate.
Drinks
As for drinks, the recommendation goes to Pineapple Mint (Fresh Pineapple, Mint Syrup, and Mint Leave) and Lychee Sunrise (Fresh Orange, Lychee, and Lime). Both of them are such a good combination and truly refreshing.
Their current special drinks, Caipirinha; made with cachaça (sugarcane hard liquor), white sugar, and lime wedges. The taste was really refreshing! When I visited here, this drink also got special deals if you buy 3. So ask for the promotion when you come here. You might get better deals!
Overall, Tucano’s offers a unique and rare eating experience, especially for churrascaria that you can’t get easily in Jakarta. The restaurant has a great ambiance, the food is excellent, and the service is top notch. Whether you are a first timer (to Brazilian cuisine) or not, I would like to recommend this restaurant to enjoy great meat and buffet in the most authentic Brazilian style. Looking at all the huge grilled meat being sliced and served in front of us is surely a very appetizing experience. It is definitely the place to go if you’re a meat lover who wants unlimited meats and appetizers. In the end, it was all worth every penny with the grade of beef, choices of fresh salad, fruits, and also the drinks.
