While at Orchard Central last weekend during our #FoodInLoveSINGAPORE trip, we visited Lady M Confections, the pioneer of the well-loved Mille Crêpe cakes originated from New York. Lady M is the brand that started the popular Mille crepe cake craze back in 2005, and Singapore is one of the countries by Lady M to expand out of New York.
Located on level 1 and 2 of Orchard Central, Lady M has a gorgeous interior design. The Lady M cafe @ Orchard Central is the cafe with the most dramatic interior in Orchard Road, if not the whole of Singapore, with the four-story-high ceiling and the bright precious space in between.
This boutique outlet looked stylish, contemporary, and elegant with the dominance of white color. You can choose to enter via Level 1 or 2, with most of the seating area concentrated on the mezzanine level, which would offer a window view facing the hustling traffic along Orchard Road, complete with tall ceilings. Such a pretty nice and cozy ambiance to enjoy fine pastries.
Lady M’s signature cake features cream sandwiched between 20 layers of crepe; the crepe layers are so thin that it practically melts in your mouth. It was a bit difficult decision to just settle on one of these beautiful creations, so we just opted for their cake set, which you can choose 2 cakes and 2 drinks for SGD 30++.
Green Tea Mille Crepe
Lady M is known for their mille crepes, so our first choice is Green Tea Mille Crepes. After the first bite, it’s like the best mille crepes ever! The sweetness of the pastry cream wedded the subtlety of the fine green tea powder. It’s not overpoweringly sweet and has a slightly bitter edge to it. The crepe cake is soft and is a real treat.
Constructed with 20 layers of crepes which were just so light and airy and the Japanese style pastry cream sandwiched between the crepes tasted amazingly fluffy, in fact almost foamy. We enjoyed the bitterness of the very fine, fragrant matcha powder that balanced out the sweetness of the cream so overall, this wasn’t cloying at all. Every mouthful of this mille crepe was just heavenly as it just melted in the mouth.
Strawberry Shortcake
For the second cake, we opted for their Strawberry Shortcake, which features a vanilla infused sponge cake, made using a fine flour imported from Japan, and studded with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. The resulting Strawberry Shortcake is light, with bursts of sweet flavor from the strawberries, and is easily one of the best versions of Strawberry Shortcake we’ve had in Singapore. The cream is slightly thick on the end though.
Hot Cafe Latte & Iced Green Tea Latte
As for drinks, we had a hot cafe latte and iced green tea latte. Their green tea latte is refreshing and bold of green tea flavor. It has a bitter aftertaste in a good way, and not overly sweet. Their cafe latte is so-so and nothing special. For high-end dessert boutique like Lady M, they better served it at least in a cup with latte art for better presentation.
Overall, Lady M Confection at Orchard Central was a stunning restaurant in the heart of Orchard Road. We must say that Lady M’s mille crepe is the best crepes cake we ever tried so far. The price was reasonable compared to their quality. Service is great and waiters are polite. Their classy and cozy place is another good point, which gives us a been pretty enjoyable experience for the afternoon break. We’ll come back for sure!
