Indian cuisine has become our new favorite food since our #FoodInLoveSINGAPORE trip. Well, it’s simply because Indian food is very common in Singapore, unlike in Jakarta where it’s not a common food for Indonesian. After observing and looking for the top Indian restaurant (at a reasonable price) in Singapore, we found out Sakunthala restaurant, which recommended by one of our Indian friends.
We found out later, Sakunthala has 5 outlets in Singapore, and we visited the one at Syed Alwi Road, which located next to Mustafa Center in Little India. The place is pretty small with a humble interior. They’re known for their cute, minimalist design and their speedy service. Seats were hard to find especially at lunch or dinner time. The restaurant is always full and packed with people (we came at 9 PM) so no wonder the restaurant open until 3 AM!
Starting out specializing in primarily South Indian cuisine, they gradually expanded to include North Indian cuisine and gained halal certification. Sakunthala’s Restaurant is also the first Indian restaurant in Singapore to offer Chinese cuisine, and they’re known for their fresh, live seafood. Specialties include South Indian street food, live seafood, and North Indian tandoori meats and bread. Generally, dishes here are executed to a consistently high standard and are tasty and delicious. Jugs of cold Water are provided to each table.
Chicken Biryani
Besides Fish Head Curry, Sakunthala also famous for their Chicken Biryani. It features a combination of Biryani Rice (long grain basmati rice with a delicate fragrance) and Chicken Masala, along with a spicy Egg Masala, papadum (a thin disc-shaped cracker), and raita (Indian condiment made with yogurt and seasoned spices) which comes as a set.
It is not only heavy in portion, but it is also heavy in taste. The portion was big enough for 2 people. The rice has a light and airy texture and cooked in chicken stock giving the rice a richer flavor which we like while the chicken is succulent, coated in a rich and creamy curry.
Butter Chicken
When in an Indian restaurant, butter chicken is a must order! Well, we got one of the best versions of butter chicken at Sakunthala. The tender chunks of boneless chicken swimming in rich and creamy gravy with a touch of tanginess from the tomato, it simply opens up your appetite. This is rich and creamy, with a bold sweet-savory flavor. We just can’t get enough of that delicious gravy. Highly recommended!
Overall, we had a great dining experience here. Sakunthala restaurant is definitely a perfect choice where you can enjoy Indian cuisine and Chinese cuisine in the same place. The foods here are executed to a consistently high standard, tasty, and delicious at a reasonable price. Portions are perfect for sharing, so we recommend you to come in a small group at least 3 people.
