Hainanese chicken rice is Singapore’s national dish, it is a must-eat food when you are here. As anyone who’s visited Singapore would know, Singapore is pretty well-known for amazing and affordable hawker fare, and Chicken Rice is one of the dishes which tops the list.
You can easily find chicken rice on every corner of Singapore, but now the question is, which one is the best chicken rice in Singapore? We are sure that this is a big question since we often limited opportunities to try local food while traveling, so we definitely want to taste the best one, right? In this post, we’re going to share our recommendation for the best chicken rice from our #FoodInLoveSINGAPORE trip.
When you ask locals for recommendations, it is impossible to agree on which is the best chicken rice in Singapore as everyone has their own favorites. However, no one will deny that Tian Tian Chicken Rice is one of the most famous chicken rice stalls. It even gained the approval of Anthony Bourdain when he was in Singapore.
Tian Tian Chicken Rice is situated on the leftmost row of the Maxwell Food Centre when entering from the main entrance. Maxwell Food Centre is located at the corner of Maxwell Road and South Bridge Road, it is within walking distance from Chinatown (along South Bridge Road). The ambiance is typical of Singapore’s hawker centers, where there are many stalls selling a variety of local fare at affordable prices, operating in a very casual no-frills canteen concept.
Tian Tian Chicken Rice will be easily spotted due to the queue that trails in front of it almost every hour of the day. You won’t miss the stall with it’s long snaking queues by the store’s twin unit with bright blue signs board. However, they are very quick and one never has to wait that long. There is a queuing system because when peak hour for lunch arrives, the queue for this chicken rice is legendary – a giant human snake that meanders the corner of this stall to the outside of Maxwell Food Centre. Orders are taken and paid in one section and you proceed to the next area to collect your food.
Okay, now let’s talk about the food which is the main highlight here. It sounds like a simple dish – just chicken, steamed or roasted, patted atop a dome of Hainanese rice, but that is exactly why this dish could be easily underrated by someone who didn’t know better.
The chicken meat is soft, juicy and tender. The rice is fragrant and flavorful with the aromas of chicken broth. Each grain is fluffy yet firm to the bite. Unlike other Hainanese chicken rice sellers, Tian Tian does a slightly thicker sauce instead of the usual light soy-sauce seasoning. The most important part of chicken rice is not the chicken, but the rice. As Anthony Bourdain said, it has to be fragrant and good enough to eat on its own. With a plate of chicken rice priced about S$4 – S$8, and vegetables priced around S$2 – S$6, you get incredible value here!
Overall, from all chicken rice we’ve tried in Singapore, we have to admit that Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is the of the best (if not the best). Their chicken rice does impress and prepared using traditional Hainanese methods. The chicken meat is soft, juicy and tender while the rice is fragrant and flavorful. It truly lives up to its name as one of the best chicken rice in Singapore.
