Laksa is a spicy noodle soup popular in Peranakan cuisine and one of Singaporean’s favorite local hawker dish. Therefore, this is a must try when you go to Singapore and here I will share a recommended place if you want to have the true taste of a good laksa in Singapore.
It is Sungei Road Laksa (结霜桥叻沙), a traditional hawker fare prepared and served in the good old way. Sungei Road Laksa is situated in Block 27 Jalan Berseh (near Jalan Besar). It is a stall in a coffee shop occupying the ground floor of the block in Kelantan Court with a surface car park right in front. I just visited their stall on my last #FoodInLoveSINGAPORE trip earlier this year.
It is self-service here. You queue to place your order, make your payment and wait to collect your food. When I reached the place, there was already a snaking queue.
While I was patiently waiting for my turn, I observed that they have an efficient production line system. One of the ladies takes the order, another puts the ingredients into bowls and the third fill the bowls with the laksa broth scooped out of a large traditional pot heated over a charcoal fire.
Sungei Road Laksa sells only a single item, the laksa here comes in only one size at $3 with a generous amount of see-hum (cockles). As they only sell one item and can prepare each bowl very quickly, the queue moves along and you don’t have to wait too long in line.
Sungei Road Laksa serves their laksa in a small bowl with a spoon only – no chopsticks. The Noodles are cut into mouthful sizes so you can eat with just the spoon. It also comes with a generous amount of cockles, fish cakes, and bean sprouts. It is topped with shredded laksa leaves and no hard-boiled egg nor taupok (tofu puff).
The orange gravy is light with the nice taste and aroma of spices and coconut milk. The laksa broth is just mildly spicy. Chilli is placed on the side for the bowl for you to stir into the gravy as you please. The chili adds an extra punch to the gravy. The gravy itself was not too oily and spicy. I also can taste dried shrimps in the gravy, giving it the extra aroma.
The gravy is robust, with hints of dried shrimp. The taste gets even better as the sprinkle of laksa leaves warms up and releases its aroma, lifting the taste of every spoonful of laksa you take. Smoky and savory!
I think what makes this laksa stand out against its competitors is that they are still using the traditional way of cooking their laksa broth atop a charcoal stove. In today’s day and age, this is old school. I don’t know about you but I’d bet that the extra yumminess in their laksa traces its way back here. Food seemed incredibly delicious when the flames are fueled by charcoal, don’t you think? I take the picture clandestinely since no photo / video recording allowed here. 😀
Overall, it is a noodle dish in curry gravy that you can find in almost every food centers or coffee shops but Sungei Road Laksa (结霜桥叻沙) is probably the only one left that still insists on cooking their laksa gravy over the charcoal fire. This is simply delicious hawker food and definitely one of the best laksa in Singapore, a cheap and good Singapore food worth queuing up for.
PS: They have no franchise and no branches, so don’t be confused with Famous Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa (著名结霜桥三轮车叻沙), which is situated in Hong Lim Food Centre in Upper Cross Street.
