Kopi tiam is one of our favorite places to enjoy coffee and Peranakan cuisine with a traditional feel or to just spend some free time. There are plenty of kopi tiam in Jakarta that can be found, with roughly the same concept and one of them is Lau’s Kopi, one of kopi tiam chain with the most outlets in Jakarta.

Kopi tiam is a traditional coffee shop mostly found in Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, and Indonesia patronized for meals and beverages. The word kopi is a Malay/Hokkien term for coffee and tiam is the Hokkien/Hakka term for shop. So, no wonder if the decoration is old shades themed with a touch of traditional Peranakan style.

Like any other kopi tiam, Lau’s Kopi Menus feature simple offerings a variety of foods based on egg, toast, and kaya, plus coffee, tea, and Milo. In addition, there is also Peranakan cuisines based on rice, noodle, vermicelli, or rice noodle such as Nasi Lemak, Nasi Goreng, Mie Goreng, Lo Mie, Bihun Goreng, Kwetiau Siram, etc.

Kopi Susu

We had their Iced Kopi Susu and we found it to be creamy while not being overly milky and not over sweet. The character of the coffee is still pretty dominant even though it’s not strong enough for us.

Nasi Goreng Ayam

For a heavier meal, their Nasi Goreng Ayam or Chicken Fried Rice will be a good choice. One thing we liked from their fried rice is, it tastes sweet and savory with bold seasoning. The rice itself was fragrant with a soft texture.

Jus Kedondong

Honestly, we’re not a fan of kedondong, but kedondong juice in here is truly refreshing. With a combination of sweet and sour taste, it so refreshing and healthy as well.

Overall, Lau’s Kopi offers a good coffee and wide variety of Peranakan dishes ranging from snack, main course, coffee, and non-coffee-based drinks. All that we tried quite satisfactory, especially their coffee, although it was a bit expensive in term of value for money.
